No. 3 ~ Favorite Films of 1993

#3 ~ Jurrasic Park

jurassic-park

I know, the plot is predictable, the acting, for the exception of Sam Neil, was not the best, but the cinematography and special effects were the best that film had ever seen to that point. The first scene where they are in the open field and all of a sudden you see these huge dinosaurs, it actually was awesome, especially in the theater.  Based on Michael Creighton’s book of the same name, this sci-fi adventure had it all. Drama, a little bit of romance, warm-hearted story, of course adventure and above all, yes I will say it again, special effects!  A lot of them. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it won three Oscars, of course for special effects, sound editing and sound mixing. But for 1993, this was the film to beat in the box office, and for years to come.  Plus a huge dinosaur chasing Jeff Goldblum was worth going to see!

No. 8 ~ Favorite Films of 1993

#8 – The Fugitive

the_fugitive_still_0

Nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, The Fugitive finally saw Tommy Lee Jones receive his due reward with an Oscar for Supporting Actor. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones race through the breathless manhunt movie based on the classic TV series. Ford is prison escapee Dr. Richard Kimble, a Chicago surgeon falsely convicted of killing his wife and determined to prove his innocence by leading his pursuers to the one-armed man who actually committed the crime. Jones (1993 Academy Award and Golden Globe winner as Best
Supporting Actor) is Sam Gerard, an unrelenting bloodhound of a U.S. Marshal. They are hunted and hunter.

This film was no stop action and Harrison Ford was equally impressive as Dr. Kimball.  I remember watching rerun of the TV series of the same name growing up, as my mother loved the show, and she and I saw the movie together.  Exciting, and action packed, but even more than that was the caliber of the acting, the script and the cinematography. Definitely one of the Best pictures of the year. It continues to be one of my favorites.

Charlie’s Angels ~ 2000 / Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle ~ 2003

Personally I preferred the second film in this reamke of the famous TV show of the same name.  Both films were action packed and full of the same corny storylines that made the 70’s TV show enduring.

I absolutely love Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, they are both outstanding in these two films, as always.  Not a big fan of Cameron Diaz (highly over-rated as an actress) I think someone else could have done a much better believeable job in the role of Natalie.  Bill Murray was exceptional as Bosley, but unfortunately was replaced in the second one by Bernie Mac, as Jimmy Bosley.  His humour grew on me and by the end of the film I had forgotten that Bill Murray had played the role in the first film.

If you like slapstick humore, and great moves by beautiful female detectives then you should love both these films, but to really enjoy either of these movies, go buy the TV show series on DVD, now that was some good TV! C

Cellular ~ 2005

This film promised to keep you on the edge of your seat.  And it did just that, for about 35 minutes.  After that it seemed to go on and on and on.  The stars, hotties, Chris Evans, Jason Stratham and Kim Basinger was able to make what could have been a really bad movie, actually pretty good.

Basinger plays a woman who is kidnapped by Jason Stratham and all she has is her cellphone and is able to call out to only one person, Chris Evans, a young irresponsible young man that has never done anything for anyone else in his life.  Suddenly realizing that the call he has received is not a prank, but real he soon tries to help the woman on the other end of the line.  Fast paced in the first half an hour or so, the film begins to wind down and should have come to a conclusion much sooner than it it.  Other than that it was well acted and directed.  Not a waste of time or money by no means. Bourne Identity ~ 2002

When a body is recovered at sea still alive, the mystery man (Matt Damon) seems to have forgotten everything in life, including who he was. Eventually he begins to remember smaller details in life and soon finds out that his name was Jason Bourne. What he doesn’t like is that a gun and fake passports also belong to him. Now Bourne, and his new friend, Marie Helena Kreutz (Potente) travel from country to country in search of his new identity. But, someone else is not happy to see him alive, and is frantically trying to track him down.

So began the Bourne Trilogy.  Matt damon is superb in this film as well as the two films that follow.  He moves into the charecter with such ease, you really believe he is Jason Bourne.  The action is packed throughout the film from beginning to end.  Masterfully directed by Doug Liman, the Bourne series will become classics in the years to come. Blood Diamond ~ 2006

Starring Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, Academy Award winning Jennifer Connelly & Djimon Hounsou, along with Michael Sheen, Arnold Vosloo, Basil Wallace, Ntare Mwine, Caruso Kuypers, and David Harewood
Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (DiCaprio), an ex-mercenary from Zimbabwe, and Solomon Vandy (Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond, the kind of stone that can transform a life… or end it. Hounsou was par excellence in this film and should have walked away with an Oscar. DiCaprio was good in this film as well, but much better in The Departed. B

Blade Trilogy ~ 1998-2001-2004

As a fan of vampire films, I have to include the Blade Trilogy in my movie library. Blade came out in 1998 with little fanfare, but did well at the box office with Wesley Snipes in the title role of the “Daywalker”. Blade II released in 2001, was I feel the best of the three, co-starring Kris Kristopherson.  In the third film, the FBI and the Vampire world are out to catch Blade, and he teams up with Jessica Beil as his mentors daughter to fight the fight and a buff Ryan Reynolds.

These films are full of action, dark and wonderfully captured on film.  The acting is somewhat poor, except for Snipes who has his charecter down pat by the third film.

As far as Vampire movies go, I give them a total review score of C-
