Trying to narrow down this list has taken me quite a while. There have been so many great actresses in so many great performances that this was a daunting task to say the least. I know many will not agree with this list, but this is not a definitive list of the best performances but a list of my favorites. A lot of thought, re-watching of movies and rearranging my list has taken place, so I hope at least you enjoy reading my opinions.
Audrey Hepburn–Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Diane Keaton–Annie Hall; Sigourney Weaver– Gorillas in the Mist; Sissy Spacek–Carrie; Olivia de Havilland -The Heiress; Halle Berry–Monsters Ball; Natalie Portman–Black Swan; Grace Kelly–Dial M for Murder.
No. 10 ~ JODIE FOSTER in “The Accused” (Sarah Tobias)
As a regular working class girl, with a reputation, Sarah Tobias was hard, rough around the edges and Jodie’s performance was just that, raw, brash and loud. At first you don’t even like Sarah Tobias and in the end you may still not have liked her, but you loved her courage, strength and stamina to see her personal nightmare through to the end. The realism Foster brings to this character is truly oscar worthy. I became mezmerized by her performance. The movie itself was lackluster, but Jodie was at her best. The only other actress that came close that year to such a performance was Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist.
