American Beauty ~ 1999

21 Jul

Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, American Beauty tells the tale of a disenchanted suburbian middle-aged father who becomes infatuated with his teen-age daughters friend. Sam Mendes, director, created a dark yet somewhat realistic tale of one mans inner demons.

Kevin Spacey was excellent as Lester Burnham, as was Wes Bentley who played Spacey’s strange teen neighbor. My favorite character was that of Chris Cooper who played Col. Frank Mitts, Wes’s father.

Sam Mendes walked away with the best director for this film, but unfortunately, Annette Bening, who gave a great performance, left the Oscars without the gold, yet again. B-
